Jill Scott is the only daughter of mother Joyce Scott. She was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on April 4, 1972. Scott was raised an sole daughter by her maternal grandmother. Scott was a student at her school, the Philadelphia High School for Girls. After graduation her school, she went to Temple University. At Temple University, Scott had at two different jobs while learning about secondary education. Her goal was to be a teacher of English at a secondary school. This dream was however put on hold when after 3 years of study and being a teachers aide she dropped out of the college. She began her career by doing live performances of poems as well as writing her own material. Then she joined forces together with Amir Quest Thompson, a part of The Roots. You Got Me was co-written by the two. Then, during Roots performance, she revealed herself as an artist. After that, she was able to get collaborations with artists like Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. She gained performance experience in the Canada production of Broadway's show Rent. She was the first artist to be signed to Hidden Beach Recordings.
