Jill Scott, the daughter of Joyce Scott in Philadelphia Pennsylvania was born April 4th, 1972. Her grandmother raised her and she was an only child. Scott attended the Philadelphia High School for Girls when she was a senior, and then she entered Temple University. In addition to working two job opportunities, Scott also studied secondary teaching in Temple University. Her dream was to become a English teacher at high school. After three years of being an aide to the teacher and a student, her dream of becoming a high-school English teacher fell through. Following her first gigs singing at poetry events and eventually, she teamed up with Amir Quest Thompson of The Roots. You Got Me, their joint song, was written by the duo. The singer performed at a Roots concert. After that, she began collaborating with musicians like Eric Benet Will Smith or Common. She also gained experience as a performer in her participation in the Canada touring of Broadway musical production Rent. The label signed her as its first artist.
