Jill Scott (n e Joyce Scott) was born to her mother on the 4th April, 1972. As an only girl She was also raised with her grandmother, who was also maternal. Scott studied at the Philadelphia High School for Girls. After graduating, she attended Temple University. While working two jobs as a teacher, she was studying secondary education. She planned on becoming a teacher of English in a secondary school. The dream however was cut short when after three years of studies and as an aide to teachers, she was kicked out of college. She started her career as a spoken-word artist, performing her own work during live poetry readings. She ultimately joined to Amir Quest love Thompson of The Roots. You Got Me is the result of their collaboration. She was first outed in the midst of a Roots Show. The show led to collaborations with Eric Benet Will Smith Common. In the Canada tour of the Broadway musical Rent, she gained valuable experiences performing. She was the first artist to be signed with Hidden Beach Recordings.
