Jill Scott is the only daughter from her mom Joyce Scott. She was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on April 4, 1972. Since she was the only child Scott was also raised through her maternal grandparents. Scott graduated from The Philadelphia High School for Girls. She then enrolled at Temple University. Along with two part-time jobs, Scott was also a teacher at Temple University. She was hoping to become a high-school English teacher. She was unable to fulfill this dream when, after three years of studying and working as a teaching assistant, she quit college. She started her career singing live poetry and performing writing her own material. In the end, she teamed up with Amir Quest Thompson, a part of The Roots. You Got Me was co-written by both. In the Roots show, she revealed her artist status. Later, she secured collaborations artists like Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. She was able to perform through the Canada Tour of Broadway's musical Rent. She was signed by the label's first artist.
