Jill Scott's mother Joyce Scott gave birth to Jill on April 4, 1972 in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. Jill Scott was raised by both her maternal grandparents and mother. Scott is an all-only child. Scott went to an institution called the Philadelphia High School for Girls as well as Temple University after graduating. Scott studied secondary school education and also worked at two other job. She hoped she would become a English secondary school teacher. She had a dream of becoming an English teacher in high school ended when she dropped out of high school. She started her career as a spoken-word artist performing her own pieces at live poetry readings and eventually linked up with Amir Quest love Thompson of The Roots. You Got Me was co-written by the two. In a Roots performance, she declared herself as a musician. In the following years, she managed to negotiate collaborations with people like Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. She was also able to gain experience on stage as she was a part of the Canada tour of the Broadway production Rent. She was contracted to Hidden Beach Recordings as their first signing artist.
