Jill Scott was born on April 4, 1972, in Philadelphia Pennsylvania to her mother Joyce Scott. She was also raised by her maternal grandmother, and was raised as a single child. Scott attended her school, the Philadelphia High School for Girls. After graduation in the year 2000, she enrolled at Temple University. Along with two job opportunities, Scott was also a teacher at Temple University. The hope was to become a English high school teacher. The dream, however was short-lived when she quit school after three years of studying and becoming a teachers' aide. Her career began by performing live poems and writing her own material. Then she joined forces together with Amir Quest Thompson, a musician in The Roots. You Got Me, their joint song, was written by them. In Roots' performance she showed herself to be an artist. After that, she secured collaborations with stars such as Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. She also gained experience on stage as she appeared in the Canada tour of the Broadway the musical Rent. The label signed her as its first artist.
