Jill Scott, the daughter of Joyce Scott in Philadelphia Pennsylvania was born on April 4, 1972. Jill Scott was raised by her maternal grandparents and mother. Scott is an all-only child. Scott attended her school at the Philadelphia High School for Girls followed by Temple University after graduating. She completed her secondary education there while working two jobs. She hoped she would become a English high school teacher. This dream was however ended when, after three years of studies and as an aide to teachers, she was kicked out of college. She began her career with a performance artist who spoke words, performing her pieces in live poetry readings. Then she teamed up with Amir Quest Love Thompson from The Roots. You Got Me was co-written by both. Her first public appearance was in the midst of a Roots Show. She secured subsequent collaborations with Eric Benet Will Smith Common. She also gained experience as a performer in The Canada touring of Broadway musical Rent. She was the first artist to be signed to Hidden Beach Recordings.
