Jill Scott, the daughter of Joyce Scott in Philadelphia Pennsylvania was born on April 4, 1972. Being a single girl Scott was also raised through her maternal grandparents. Scott attended the Philadelphia High School for Girls. After graduating, she attended Temple University. Between two work and studying secondary education, she continued her studies. She hoped to be an high school English teacher. The dream however was put on hold when after 3 years of studying and working as an aide to teachers, she was kicked out of college. Being a poet started performing, she was able to perform in live poetry recitals. Then she joined together with Amir Quest Thompson (of The Roots) to create a group. You Got Me is the product of their partnership. Her first public appearance was as an artiste at a Roots Show. Then she secured collaborations which included Eric Benet Will Smith, and Common. She was able to perform during the Canada production of Broadway's show Rent. She signed as the label's first artist.
