Jill Scott is the only child of mother Joyce Scott. She was born in Philadelphia the state of Pennsylvania on the 4th of April, 1972. Since she was the only child Scott was also raised through her maternal grandparents. Scott was a graduate of her school, the Philadelphia High School for Girls. Then she enrolled in Temple University. In Temple, Scott held two jobs while she was taking classes in secondary education. She hoped to become a high-school English teacher. It was impossible to realize this dream when, after studying for three years and becoming a teaching assistant, she quit college. She started her career as a spoken-word artist, performing her own work during live poetry readings. She later joined forces together with Amir Quest love Thompson of The Roots. You Got Me, their collaboration song, was composed by the duo. She was first outed as a performer at the Roots Show. After that, she was able to negotiate collaborations with people like Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. She gained performance experience through the Canada tour of Broadway's musical Rent. The label signed her as its first artist.
