Jill Scott's mother Joyce Scott gave birth to Jill on 4 April 1972 located in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. She was raised by her mother and grandmother. The only child she has. Scott completed her studies at the Philadelphia High School for Girls. Then she enrolled in Temple University. She took secondary school classes her time at Temple University while working on two other jobs. She wanted to be the high school's English teacher. After three years of being a teacher's aide and studying her goal of becoming a high school English teacher fell through. She began her career by doing live performances of poems as well as her own work. In the end, she teamed up along with Amir Quest Thompson, a musician in The Roots. You Got Me, their collaboration song, was composed by them. At the Roots performance, she declared herself as a musician. After that, she secured collaborations with stars like Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. Also, she was performers in The Canada touring of Broadway musical production Rent.
